This policy was rewritten when the site moved off the Discourse forum platform to a static Astro site. The old policy was written for a forum, so it covered things this site no longer does: account registration, email verification, IP addresses recorded on every post, cookies and server logs kept for up to 90 days. The forum is gone, and with it the accounts, the email collection and those cookies.

The current site is a static publication with no accounts and no analytics. Comments are optional and handled by Hyvor Talk. Server logs are kept for about two weeks. The previous forum policy was last updated May 14, 2025 and is kept in our records.

This site is a static publication. It does not run ads, third-party trackers or analytics that profile you. Here is exactly what is collected and what is not.

What the site collects

  • Server logs. The web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, timestamp, requested page, browser user agent) for security and troubleshooting. These are rotated regularly and kept for about two weeks, then deleted.
  • Theme preference. Your light or dark choice is stored locally in your browser and never leaves your device.

What the site does not do

  • No account needed to read. Commenting is optional and runs through Hyvor Talk, described below.
  • No advertising or behavioral tracking.
  • No analytics cookies and no third-party cookies set by this site.
  • No selling or trading of personal data. Ever.

Comments

Comments are powered by Hyvor Talk, a privacy-first commenting service. This is a common setup: instead of building and storing a user database myself, the comment accounts and the comments themselves live on Hyvor Talk’s servers, not on mine.

What that means for you:

  • thecaptaindumbass.com does not store your comment account or personal details. Hyvor Talk holds that data.
  • To comment you sign in through Hyvor Talk. If you never comment, no account or comment data is created.
  • Hyvor Talk runs no ads and no advertising trackers, though it may set its own cookies when you sign in. See their privacy policy for exactly what they store.
  • You manage or delete your comment data through your Hyvor Talk account.

Outside of comments, the only data this site handles is the server logs described above, which delete themselves automatically.

Posts link to outside sites. Those sites have their own privacy policies and this policy does not cover them.

Children

This site is intended for people 13 and older. It does not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. See the COPPA rule for details.

Any changes are posted here. Check back now and then.
