FAQ and Guidelines
A few quick answers and the ground rules for taking part. These are not laws, just solid advice so everyone gets the most out of the site.
What is this site?
It is the field notebook of Dennis Ayotte, The Captain Dumbass®. Plain-language writing on IT, systems administration, development, privacy and the homelab, plus the occasional build log and a short story. No ads. No trackers.
Can I comment?
Yes. Comments are powered by Hyvor Talk, a privacy-first service with no ads and no tracking. The guidelines below are how to keep it friendly.
Keep it civil
Treat this like your favorite pub or park, a place to talk, laugh, learn and maybe argue but never fight. Bring curiosity, not cruelty. Smart conversation without the ego trip.
Disagree without being a jerk
Debates are welcome. Personal attacks are not.
Avoid:
- Name-calling
- Sarcasm aimed at people
- Responding to tone instead of substance
- Nitpicking just to contradict
Instead:
- Offer insight
- Share your experience
- Help refine an idea
Attack ideas, not people.
Share what is yours
Only post what you created or have permission to share. No piracy. No sketchy links. No “how to hack X” unless it is legal and for education.
Safety first
This is a public site, indexed by search engines. Keep it safe for work and respectful of everyone. That means no hate speech, no harassment, no doxxing or impersonation and no NSFW content. The Captain Dumbass® does not tolerate bullies. Plain and simple.
