A companion to Sony Is Ending Game Discs in 2028. I wanted to show, not just tell, why the disc matters, so here is my actual collection, researched title by title.
The argument against disc production ending usually gets waved off with “but everything is digital anyway, what’s the difference?” The difference is control. A disc is the one copy of a game that the publisher cannot reach into your house and switch off, downgrade or delist. But a disc is only worth collecting if the game is actually on it, and that is the part most people never check.
So I check. Before I buy anything physical, I research three things:
- Offline play: can I play the full single-player campaign with no internet?
- Day-one patch: is a mandatory download needed before the game is even playable?
- PSN account: does it force a login just to play single-player?
My main source is doesitplay.org, cross-checked against the PlayStation Store listing and publisher FAQs. Here is what that research looks like across my whole collection.
The numbers
I currently track 86 disc games (46 PS4, 40 PS5). After researching every one:
- 85 of 86 play the full single-player campaign completely offline.
- 0 of 86 require a PSN login to play single-player.
- 1 of 86 (Star Wars Outlaws) will not even install without an internet connection and a mandatory 8 GB patch. That is the one game on my shelf where the disc is closer to a coaster than a copy.
- 13 more run off the disc but play noticeably better with a patch, ranging from minor bug fixes to The Callisto Protocol, which is playable but so buggy on the disc build that the platinum trophy is unobtainable without updating. One more, Silent Hill: Townfall, is pre-ordered but not out yet, so its disc build is still an unknown until it lands.
That is the whole point. A disc is not automatically a safe copy. You have to do the homework, title by title, and the answer is not always yes. Star Wars Outlaws proves that publishers can already ship a disc that is useless without a server. If disc production ends entirely, every new game becomes an Outlaws, or worse, a license that Sony can revoke the way they deleted 551 movies people paid for.
The good news buried in my data: the overwhelming majority of physical games still work exactly as they should, forever, with no server and no account. That is worth protecting.
Why this is a hard line for me
This is not an anti-digital rant, and I want to be clear about that. I own more than 350 digital PlayStation games. I bought every one of them because I had a real choice and the price was right. I am not against digital on principle.
What changed is that the choice is disappearing. After the PS3 dropped backward compatibility and I could no longer play the games I already owned on the system that replaced it, I stopped buying any console that cannot play my library. That was the moment the whole thing clicked for me.
So my rule now is simple. If a game does not pass the doesitplay check, I do not buy it in most cases. If I cannot buy it physical, it is not an option. And if the PS6 turns out to be digital only, it is not an option either. I have uninstalled my digital games and I play physical only now. Not because digital is evil, but because I want to keep the choice I was promised when I paid.
