The Haunting of Edgewood Manor: My Unreal Engine 5 Horror Game

From Atari and the NES to Unreal Engine 5 and a very haunted house.

My Journey into Game Development

My love of video games started in the late 1970s with the Atari 2600 and Magnavox Odyssey, but it really took off with the NES. I have owned many Nintendo consoles and handhelds since, along with a soft spot for PlayStation, Resident Evil most of all.

Early on I wanted to be a game developer, but without modern engines, training or resources it was not realistic. Years later I started experimenting with Unity, building Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda clones that both had working mechanics and level designs. I repeated the exercise in GameMaker but got frustrated, since I could not share those projects legally. Looking for something original, I spent a little time on The Adventures of Timmy before I realized where my real interest was: horror games.

To get the realism I wanted, I moved to Unreal Engine 5. I am still a beginner, so I spent months learning before committing to a project. I now have 25 to 30 percent of the story written and the core mechanics planned. I will use purchased assets where it makes sense, but all the levels and structures are my own design, built from modular assets so the result stays original.

As a computer engineer I have always liked where technology and storytelling meet. Unreal Engine 5, especially Lumen and Nanite, lines up well with the kind of experience I want to build. My current project, The Haunting of Edgewood Manor, mixes atmospheric horror with investigative gameplay. The goal is to push what I can do technically while making something that actually lands with players.

The Haunting of Edgewood Manor

Development status: This project is on indefinite hold. It is not cancelled, but active development is paused. All images and story elements shown here are from the early development phase.

Step into the shoes of a paranormal investigator in this atmospheric first-person horror exploration game. Set in the abandoned Edgewood Manor, you uncover the dark history of a once-prestigious estate through detailed investigation and environmental storytelling.

Key features:

  • Environmental storytelling and detailed investigation mechanics
  • A fully explorable Victorian mansion with period-accurate architecture
  • Dynamic paranormal encounters and atmospheric horror
  • Puzzles that slowly reveal the manor’s secrets

Built with Unreal Engine 5, the game uses Lumen for dynamic global illumination and Nanite for high geometric detail, all in service of an atmosphere that feels genuinely unsettling.
