Parts Pairing: Why You Don't Fully Own the Device You Bought

Here is a repair that should be simple. Your iPhone battery is worn out. A friend gives you an identical phone of the same model with a cracked screen, so you pull its battery and install it in yours. The battery is genuine Apple hardware. The swap is clean. You power on and get a warning: “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery.” In Settings, where battery health used to be, you now read “Health information not available for this battery.”

Nothing is wrong with the battery. The phone is refusing to fully accept it because of a number it cannot match. This is parts pairing, and it is one of the cleanest examples of how a company keeps control of hardware after you have paid for it and taken it home.


How Parts Pairing Actually Works

Start with serialization, which is harmless on its own. Many components in a modern device carry a tiny microcontroller, a chip sometimes no larger than a grain of rice, that stores data including a serial number. iFixit has a good technical writeup of this. Manufacturers use serial numbers across every industry for inventory, quality control and theft prevention. That is fine. Valve even exposes part serial numbers in the Steam Deck settings to make repairs easier.

Parts pairing is the turn that makes serialization hostile. When the device boots, the motherboard runs a roll-call and asks each component to report its serial number. If a part reports a number the system was not expecting, even when the part is identical and genuine, the device treats it as suspect. You lose features. You get persistent warnings. The hardware works, but the software has decided you do not have permission to use it fully.

The control point is that only the manufacturer holds the key to clear the pairing. Apple can run the part through its internal tool, register the new serial and make the warnings disappear and the features return. You cannot. That single reset button, kept on one side of the counter, is the whole game.

The most telling example: on the iPhone 13, swapping the display would disable Face ID, even though that model’s screen is not the part that houses the Face ID illuminator. There was no technical reason the repair should break facial recognition. The system simply noticed an unrecognized part and punished the user. iFixit documented this.


This Is Not Just Phones

The same digital lock shows up across consumer hardware.

  • Printers. HP was caught pushing fake error messages to discourage non-HP ink.
  • Appliances. GE refrigerator owners have fought error messages for using off-brand water filters. Keurig once tried to police which coffee pods you put in your own machine.
  • Tractors. John Deere equipment can drop into “limp mode” on a fault, and the software needed to diagnose and clear the error is not publicly available. Farmers wait on Deere’s schedule while crops sit in the field. iFixit covered how this even ran afoul of the Clean Air Act.

The pattern is always the same. A manufacturer holds the necessary software or the pairing key hostage, then charges for access to a thing you already own.


The Ownership Question

The stated reasons for parts pairing are safety and security, the idea being that a bad third-party part could be dangerous or insecure. That argument falls apart when the warnings fire for genuine first-party parts whose only sin is an unregistered serial number. If third-party parts are trusted on multi-ton vehicles driving down public highways, the safety story for a phone battery is thin.

The real effect is a repair monopoly. Independent shops either pay into the manufacturer’s program, learn delicate microsoldering to move the original chip onto the new part or turn the customer away. Many simply cannot compete, so repair gets more expensive and more centralized, and more devices get thrown out when a cheap fix is blocked.

There has been movement. Under heavy criticism, Apple announced in April 2024 that it would loosen some parts-pairing rules, allowing used genuine parts and dropping the requirement to hand over a broken device’s serial number when ordering. Apple’s hardware chief said the company believes third-party parts should be usable as long as their use is disclosed. iFixit’s response was that the rollback does not go far enough, because the underlying control stays in the manufacturer’s hands.

That is the heart of it. When the company that built your device gets to decide which parts you may install in it, you do not fully own the device. You are licensing the manufacturer’s permission to keep using it.


What You Can Do

You have more leverage here than it feels like.

Before you buy, check a device’s repairability. iFixit publishes repair scores, and they are a fair proxy for how much control you will keep after the purchase. Reward the companies that make parts and manuals available.

When something breaks, try an independent repair shop before you replace the whole device. Independent shops are exactly what parts pairing is designed to squeeze out, and using them keeps that option alive.

Then support right-to-repair bills in your state. Several have already passed, and they exist because enough people asked. Tell your state representatives you want repair access protected for the things you own.
