Microsoft Is Remotely Disabling Software You Paid For

If you haven’t read my earlier post on walking away from both Apple and Microsoft, start there.

On July 13, 2026, Microsoft will disable editing in Office 2019 on Mac, iPhone and iPad. If you paid full price for a perpetual license, that does not matter. You will still be able to open files and print them. That is it. No editing. No saving. No creating new documents.

Microsoft calls this “reduced functionality mode.” A more accurate name is “pay us again or you are locked out.”

What They Said in 2023

When Microsoft ended support for Office 2019 for Mac in October 2023, they published a specific statement:

“Rest assured that all your Office 2019 apps will continue to function.”

July 13, 2026 is the date that statement stops being true.

The Technical Cover Story

Microsoft says a certificate used to validate your Office license is expiring. When it does, the app can no longer confirm you have a valid license, so it blocks editing.

Certificates can be renewed. That is not a hard technical limitation. Microsoft chose not to renew it. They are using an expiring certificate as the mechanism to retire software they no longer want you running, regardless of what you paid for it.

Who Gets Hit

Office 2019 on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Windows and Android are not affected. This is an Apple-ecosystem-only problem.

If you are on Office 2021 or Microsoft 365, there is a free update path. If you are on Office 2019, there is no update. Your options are:

  • Buy Office 2021 (which loses support in late 2026 anyway)
  • Buy Office 2024 (requires macOS Sonoma or later)
  • Subscribe to Microsoft 365
  • Move to something else

Meanwhile, vendors are still actively selling Office 2019 licenses right now to buyers who have no idea what is coming.

Why This Is Different

I left Windows over Windows 11. My hardware was fine. Being forced was the problem. Copilot pushed me the rest of the way out. I went back to Apple, which has its own problems I have written about separately.

But this is in a different category. This is not a new product that requires new hardware. This is not an AI feature you did not ask for. This is a company using a remote kill switch on software you purchased outright, on a specific date, by choice, while still collecting money from people buying the same product.

Perpetual license used to mean something. You bought it. It ran until the hardware died. That meaning is gone.

What Is Worth Looking At

LibreOffice is free, open source and runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. Apple’s iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) is also free and comes with every Mac. Neither requires a subscription. Neither can be remotely disabled.

This is also part of the longer reason I am building Fathom-OS. The more your tools depend on someone else’s servers, certificates and policies, the less control you have over them.
